A face in the crowd

    1. The women the picture are from Apatani tribe found in Ziro valley in Eastern Himalayas.
Historically, they were surrounded by hostile Nishi and Tagin tribe who would raid their villages, kill their livestock and kidnap their women. Those ‘beard tattoo’ and massive nose rings/earrings were suppose to make them less attractive to the raiders.
This practice has long stopped and now you will only find old Apatani women bearing testament to this particularly violent aspect of life in the past.

      1. Ohh.. wow.. such a strong will for survival, what a sad story of violence. It is great to hear that the violence has stopped. Thank you for taking the time to explain. I appreciate it. It is a fascinating culture!
        More than just Lagaan 🙂

      2. 🙂 The idea certainly is fascinating, and had I been in the position to do so, I would in one heartbeat, and give you a good tip! 😉
